The Truth Behind Candid and Posed – Where Do You See Your Wedding Day

When discussing the debate between candid and posed photos, it’s a common myth that posed images lack authenticity. This perspective overlooks the artistry and creativity posed images can showcase.

Here’s a little secret: while any photographer can capture candid shots, only a few can expertly provide natural direction for stunning results. Find out more below!

Understanding Candid Wedding Photography

Candid wedding photography is a style of photography that aims to capture moments in their most natural and unposed form. In candid photography, the subject is often unaware of the photographer’s presence, resulting in authentic and spontaneous images that showcase genuine emotions and interactions. This style of photography is commonly used in street photography, weddings, and other events where the photographer seeks to document the essence of the moment without interference.

One of the key principles of candid photography is to capture the subject in their most honest and vulnerable state, without artificial posing or direction. This allows for a deeper connection between the viewer and the image, as they are able to glimpse a genuine moment frozen in time. The beauty of candid photography lies in its ability to capture fleeting moments that would otherwise go unnoticed, revealing the true essence of a person or a scene.

On a wedding day every photographer uses candid photos for getting ready, ceremony and  reception (speeches, celebrating popping champagne, first dance etc).

The Charm of Posed Wedding Photos

Posed photography refers to the act of directing subjects to arrange themselves in a specific way for the purpose of capturing a photograph. Unlike candid photography, where subjects are captured in natural and unposed moments, posed photography allows for greater control over the composition and aesthetics of an image.

In posed photography, I am able to carefully consider factors such as lighting, background, and the positioning of subjects to create a visually pleasing and impactful image. This type of photography is commonly used in portrait photography, fashion photography, and commercial photography, where the focus is on showcasing the subject in a stylised and deliberate manner.

Posed photography requires communication and collaboration between the photographer and the subjects to achieve the desired result. This can take years to master.

Posed photography on a wedding day can be family photos, bridal party photos, bride and groom portraits.

Advantages of Combining Both Styles

Combining two types of wedding photos – the real, in-the-moment ones, and the ones where everyone’s posed – makes your wedding album super interesting. It’s like getting the best of both worlds, capturing every laugh, tear, and big smile from you and your guests. Imagine flipping through your album and seeing all those real, fun moments, and also those beautiful, set-up shots that look like they’re out of a magazine.

The candid photos grab those unexpected, real moments. You know, when someone bursts out laughing or tears up – all the feels without anyone having to say “cheese”. These make your album feel alive, showing off the real fun and love of the day.

Then, the posed photos add a bit of magic. They’re those perfect, everyone-looking-their-best shots that you frame. They show the serious, beautiful side of your wedding, like those fairy-tale moments you’ve dreamed about. It’s your wedding’s movie poster moments.

Putting both types in your album means you won’t miss anything. You get the crazy, cute candid stuff plus the wow, stunning posed shots. It’s all about showing every side of your big day, making sure you can remember the big celebrations and those sweet, quiet bits too. This way, your album tells the whole story, not just parts of it, making it a full picture of your amazing day.
